The first and probably most important question to answer is: What is the shoot for?
Consider your brand or the brand of your business; what version of yourself do you want to present in the photos? These answers will greatly affect how you approach your wardrobe.

What is the look you are going for? Do you have references and inspirations you can draw from?
- Some common wardrobe look categories are; casual, semi-casual, formal, fitness, date night, day date, etc.
- Consider jewelry and accessories. As a general rule, less is more… BUT this all depends on you and the look you are wanting to achieve.
- If the shoot is for your brand or business you may want to avoid obvious logos, unless they are relevant to you or sponsors.
- Consider the set (indoor, outdoor); what is the colour pallet? Do you have clothes that would compliment that colour pallet?
With couples or family photoshoots, discuss your wardrobe beforehand. You can deliberately coordinate, or at least choose colours that will compliment each other nicely. This kind of attention to detail is what levels up the look of your photos.

Discuss important details with your photographer
Ask your photographer these questions:
- How many looks have you discussed with your photographer?
- Will there be somewhere for you to change on set? Your photographer may have a portable change room, or they may not. In which case, be prepared to change in your car or any other discrete place you can find!
- If the shoot is outdoors, dress accordingly. This doesn’t mean if it’s cold you have to be bundled up, but make sure you dress comfortably and you can withstand the weather!
- You can bring a blanket to cover yourself up in between shots.

Don’t Forget the Finishing Touches
And lastly, (This may seem obvious, but we can’t stress this enough…) MAKE SURE YOUR CLOTHES ARE CLEAN, FRESH AND WRINKLE FREE!
There’s nothing more frustrating for a photo editor than being asked to remove an unreasonable amount of wrinkles and stains from clothing in photoshop… Plus it’s not always possible to fix it. That extra work could have easily been avoided. And this kind of photo editing will usually cost you extra too!
Wardrobe Conclusion
As photographers, we want you to look and FEEL great during the shoot, and when you see your photos. The more preparation you do, the less you’ll have to worry about when you’re in front of the camera. You’ll be able to relax and work it for that lens knowing that your wardrobe looks great, and you feel confident in your clothing!
